Comment
on the use of video in teaching language skills:
After
collecting some references about the use of ICT in language teaching, in this
case the use of video in developing language skills, there are some important
things to know related to the implementation of that tool in the classroom.
In
my opinion, the use of video can be a good choice for the teacher in teaching
language skills. Using video is practice and teacher can create some activity
or exercise from watching the video. Because watching video involves audio and
visual activities, language skills can be taught integratedly by the teacher.
First, the teacher can have the students practice their listening skill by
understanding the content of the video. The second activity might be speaking.
The teacher can ask the students to retell the story or the message from the
video (if it’s a movie for example). Then, the teacher can also decide to have
writing activity integrated with vocabulary. The students are asked to write
down new vocabulary then try to find the meaning of those words, and then ask
them to make their own sentences using those words.
Besides
some advantages of video in teaching language skills, as can be viewed above,
however there is no activity for reading skill by using video in the classroom.
The teacher may consider not using video when they want to focus on reading
activity. They may find other media in order to run the classroom activity.
Another
thing as the consideration when the teacher wants to use video in teaching
language skills is the preparation. The teacher should prepare, for example,
laptop and LCD in the classroom. The use of video is usually completed with the
load speaker. Even though the teacher has prepared laptop and LCD but load
speaker is needed, the activity cannot run as we hoped. Furthermore, the tools
needed are quite expensive if the teacher has to prepare by themselves, except
if the school can facilitate the teacher by preparing those tools.
